Your SASSA gold card stopped working. Here is what to do now

The card is dead, the money is not. Every month since September, grants have kept landing in accounts their owners cannot touch. One trip with your ID fixes it, and it costs nothing.

Key points
  • Gold cards were blocked after 31 August 2026
  • Grant money kept arriving in the accounts anyway
  • The new Black Card is free and works the same day

The card goes into the machine at the till. The screen says declined. The pension was paid that morning, but none of it comes out.

That has been happening across South Africa since September. The old SASSA gold card was blocked after 31 August 2026, and Postbank says it will not work again.

The money did not go anywhere. It is still being paid into the same Postbank account every month. What is missing is a card that can reach it.

Is the SASSA gold card still working in 2026?

No. From 1 September 2026 the gold card stopped working at ATMs and shop tills. Balance checks and statements on the old card stopped too.

"What will only allow you to have access to your funds is the Postbank black card," Postbank's chief commercial officer Thami Cele told eNCA.

People are still searching for "sassa gold card still working in 2026 september" weeks later, because many of the articles they find were written before the deadline. The answer has not changed since then. The card is finished.

If you get your grant through Capitec, FNB, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank or another bank, none of this affects you. Cele said those beneficiaries "do not need to come forward".

Why did SASSA cards stop working?

The problem started in 2021. The secret security key used to make the gold cards was compromised, GroundUp reported. That meant the cards could no longer be trusted to keep money safe.

The Reserve Bank told Postbank to replace every one. It took four deadlines.

Date What happened Gold cards still not swapped
28 February 2025 First deadline, pushed to 20 March
28 March 2025 Deadline moved to 31 May 2025 About 1.6 million of 2.9 million
September 2025 Reserve Bank gave 15 more months About 450,000
29 April 2026 Swapping restarted, final date set About 600,000
August 2026 Last weeks before the cut-off 250,000 to 280,000
31 August 2026 Gold cards blocked from the next day Not published

What happens to my SASSA money if I missed the deadline?

Nothing is taken away. The Black Sash puts it simply. "The money is still paid into the Postbank account, just like any other private bank account where cards expire and need to be replaced."

So September's grant, October's grant and every one after it should be sitting in your account, waiting. Once you have a Black Card, you can take it out.

There is one reason not to wait too long. SASSA's long-standing rule is that a grant can lapse if it is not claimed for three months in a row. SASSA has said it sends a letter first, and that you can ask for the grant to be restored within 90 days. Swapping the card now keeps you well clear of that line.

How do I replace my SASSA gold card?

It takes one visit. Here is what Postbank and SASSA say to do.

  1. Find a site. Dial *120*355# on any phone to see the nearest card replacement point. You can also call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.
  2. Take your ID. A valid South African ID or a temporary ID. That is the only document Postbank lists.
  3. Go during opening hours. Replacement sites run Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, according to SASSA's July statement. Many are inside Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores.
  4. Pay nothing. The swap is free. Anyone who asks for money is not Postbank.
  5. Use it straight away. The Citizen reports the Black Card works as soon as it is issued.

Expect a queue, especially in the first week of the month when grants land. Postbank said in July it was "already noticing a steady increase in queues" and expected longer ones closer to the deadline. Going mid-month is usually quicker.

Postbank said most replacement sites would stay open for a while after 31 August, the Sunday Tribune reported. It did not say for how long.

What if I am too old or sick to stand in a queue?

The Black Sash says you can appoint a procurator. This is someone you trust, given legal permission to deal with SASSA for you. Ask at your SASSA office how to set one up.

Can I move my grant to Capitec or another bank instead?

Yes. The Black Sash explains the steps.

  • Download SASSA's Annexure C form from the SASSA website.
  • Ask your bank to fill in your account details and stamp it.
  • Hand it in yourself at a SASSA office. It cannot be done online.
  • If it is in before the 20th, the change usually starts the next month.

Weigh the cost first. Postbank's Black Card comes with three free withdrawals a month, one free card replacement and a free monthly statement, says The Citizen. A private bank charges its normal fees, and those fees can push a small balance into the minus. Our guide on why a bank account goes negative without an overdraft shows how that happens.

How do I avoid SASSA card scams?

Postbank gave one clear test. If the card does not say Postbank on the front, and someone asks you to fill in forms to change your payment method, it is not a Postbank Black Card.

A few more rules keep your grant safe:

  • Never tell anyone your PIN, not even someone helping you at the till.
  • Never pay anyone to "fast-track" a new card.
  • Only call numbers you can check. Postbank is 0800 53 54 55. SASSA is 0800 60 10 11. The Black Sash helpline is 072 663 3739.

What is still unclear?

Postbank has not published how many gold cards were still unswapped when the cut-off came. Nobody has said exactly how long the extra replacement sites will stay open.

People still search for a "sassa gold card replacement deadline extension". The 2025 deadlines were extended three times, but this time no extension has been announced. The Reserve Bank's 15-month extension, granted in September 2025, runs out around the end of 2026.

So is my SASSA money lost?

No. Every grant paid since September has gone into your account, the same as before. Missing the deadline does not stop the grant, Postbank has said. The card stopped. The payments did not.

What it needs is one trip. Dial *120*355#, take your ID to the nearest site and walk out with a card that works at the till that same day. Then check our tracker, "SASSA payment dates for November 2026 (and what changed in October)", for the next pay day. This month the dates may move for the 4 November election, but your money is already there.
