Is the US about to dump $1 billion of stolen bitcoin? What the Bitfinex wallet just did

A billion dollars of stolen bitcoin moved at 9:33 on a Thursday morning. Nobody in Washington will say why. Here is everything the blockchain shows.

Key points
  • 12,267 bitcoin left a US government wallet on Thursday
  • None of it has reached an exchange yet
  • The coins were stolen by a man who later married a rapper

9:33 in the morning, New York time.

That is when 12,267 bitcoin left a wallet the US government has guarded for years. The coins were worth about $1.01 billion, according to on-chain data from Arkham Intelligence reported by CoinDesk.

Arkham labels the wallet "Bitfinex Hacker Seized Funds". It holds the loot from one of the biggest crypto heists ever.

Within hours, a market alert about the move passed 940,000 views. The replies filled with fear. "Are they gonna sell the Bitcoin?" one person asked. Another was sure they would dump it right after they bought again. A third simply said: "So that's why everyone is panicking."

Is the US government selling its bitcoin?

Nobody knows yet.

The coins went to a new address with no public label. A second transfer went to another fresh address. What did not happen matters more: no coins went to an exchange. CoinDesk says the pattern looks more like wallet reshuffling than a sale.

The Justice Department and the US Marshals Service, which handle seized crypto, did not explain the move, TFTC reports.

Still, the day before looked different. On 7 October about 3,200 bitcoin, worth some $264 million, plus $119 million in the stablecoin USDT went to Coinbase Prime deposit addresses, CoinDesk reports. Arkham tied those funds to the FTX and Bitfinex seizures. Coinbase Prime also stores coins for big clients, so a deposit there is not proof of a sale.

Where did the stolen Bitfinex bitcoin go?

Here is the whole trail, from the night of the hack to this week. Values are at the time of each event.

When What happened Bitcoin Value then
August 2016 Hacker drains the Bitfinex exchange 119,754 Bitcoin price fell about 20% on the news
2016 to 2022 About 25,000 coins washed through a web of accounts about 25,000 Not known
8 Feb 2022 Agents arrest a New York couple and seize the rest more than 94,000 $3.6 billion
Feb 2024 US moves part of the seized coins not given about $922 million
Jan 2025 Prosecutors ask a court to hand the coins back to Bitfinex 94,643 Not given
7 Oct 2026 Seized coins sent to Coinbase Prime addresses about 3,200 about $264 million
8 Oct 2026 Bitfinex wallet moves coins to unlabeled addresses 12,267 about $1.01 billion

At Thursday's price of roughly $82,350 a coin, the 94,643 bitcoin in that January 2025 court filing would be worth about $7.8 billion. That is more than double the $3.6 billion they were worth on the day of the arrest.

Thursday's move was about 13% of that pile.

Who are Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan?

In August 2016, someone broke into Bitfinex, one of the world's biggest crypto exchanges, and took 119,754 bitcoin. For more than five years, the trail went quiet.

Then on 8 February 2022, agents arrested Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, in New York. Investigators said they found a file in one of Lichtenstein's online accounts. It held the private keys, the secret passwords, to the wallet that got the stolen coins. That one file let the US seize more than 94,000 bitcoin, worth $3.6 billion at the time. Officials called it the department's largest financial seizure ever.

Morgan made it stranger. She had a side career as a rapper called Razzlekhan, with videos that went viral as soon as the case broke. She called herself the "crocodile of Wall Street".

Some people in the replies wondered if North Korea's Lazarus hacking group was behind it all. In court, the story was simpler. Lichtenstein pleaded guilty in August 2023 and admitted he carried out the hack himself. Morgan pleaded guilty to helping launder the money.

In November 2024 a judge sent Lichtenstein to prison for five years. Morgan got 18 months.

What does it mean when the government moves bitcoin?

Washington is one of the biggest bitcoin holders on earth. Arkham data puts US government crypto at about $25.5 billion.

A move to an exchange often comes before a sale. A move to fresh, unlabeled wallets often means storage changes, new custody or paperwork. TFTC suggests this week's moves could be staging ahead of a decision on Bitfinex's claim, though nobody has confirmed that.

What happened to bitcoin's price after past moves?

The last big Bitfinex move came in February 2024, when the government shifted about $922 million of seized coins. That happened just after bitcoin broke above $60,000, FXStreet reported.

In July 2026, about $288 million of seized bitcoin and ether went to Coinbase Prime through fresh wallets, according to CoinDesk.

This time, the market barely blinked. Bitcoin steadied near $82,500 on Thursday and later climbed back above $83,000, according to CoinDesk's market reports that day.

Not everyone was relieved. One reply hoped bitcoin would crash, because a dip means cheaper coins. Gold has its own version of this fear, and our look at whether gold still makes sense for savers covers it.

Is the bitcoin going into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve?

That is the big hope among bitcoin fans. In March 2025, President Donald Trump signed an order creating a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. It says bitcoin the government wins through forfeiture should go into the reserve and should not be sold.

One reply guessed the coins were heading to a US Treasury wallet. Nobody in government has said so, but the order is why many traders doubt a fire sale.

There is a catch. In January 2025, prosecutors asked the court to return the 94,643 coins to Bitfinex "in kind", meaning as bitcoin, not cash. Bitfinex and the couple both say the exchange was the only victim. Reports say Bitfinex plans to use most of what it gets back to buy back and burn tokens it gave users after the hack.

So the coins could go back to the exchange they were stolen from, into a national reserve, or onto the market. Billions ride on which one it is.

Governments love a stash. China has been buying gold every month for nearly two years, and stolen treasure tends to surface in odd ways, like the CIA officer caught with gold bars.

Why is everyone watching this wallet?

A crime story from 2016 has turned into a market story. A billion dollars sat untouched for years, then moved in a single morning. Thousands of traders now refresh the same blockchain page. If those 12,267 coins ever land on an exchange, they will all see it within minutes. The trail that started with a hacker in 2016 runs straight through the US government's own wallet, in public, for anyone to follow.
