For five seasons, he sat at the breakfast table while his TV father lied to the whole family.
Now the actor behind Walter White Jr. is gone. RJ Mitte died on Monday 12 October 2026 in Texas. He was 34.
His representatives announced the news. They described him as an advocate who drew on his own life with cerebral palsy to build a platform for disability awareness and inclusion.
The news spread fast. One post about his death passed 16 million views in a day. The replies were full of shock. Many fans said they had rewatched Breaking Bad only this year.

How did RJ Mitte die?
TMZ reported that he died by suicide, citing a county official. Police say their investigation is still open.
No official cause has been released by the family or the authorities. People who knew him told TMZ that he had seemed positive in the weeks before. Deaths like this almost never come down to one reason, and nobody outside his circle knows the full picture.
His family and fiancée have not spoken in public beyond the statement from his reps.
Who was RJ Mitte, the actor who played Walt Jr.?
Roy Frank "RJ" Mitte III was born on 21 August 1992 in Jackson, Mississippi. Doctors found he had cerebral palsy when he was 3 years old.
Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects how the brain controls muscles. It can change how a person walks, moves and speaks. It does not get worse over time, but it never goes away.
He grew up wanting to act anyway. As a teenager, he moved with his family to Los Angeles to chase small parts. Then came the role that changed everything.
Did RJ Mitte really have cerebral palsy like Walt Jr.?
Yes. That is what made the role so rare.
In Breaking Bad, Walter White Jr. lives with cerebral palsy. He walks with crutches and goes by "Flynn" when he wants to feel like his own person. Mitte played him in more than 50 episodes across all five seasons on AMC.
Hollywood has a long habit of casting actors without a disability to play disabled characters. Breaking Bad cast a young man who knew the life from the inside. His condition is milder than his character's, so he had to learn to slow his speech and walk the way Walt Jr. did.
For a lot of disabled viewers, it was the first time they saw a teenager like them on a hit TV show. He was not a sad side story. He was a funny, stubborn kid who loved breakfast and hated being lied to.

Was Walt Jr. almost killed off in Breaking Bad?
He was. Creator Vince Gilligan said in a 2018 interview that he had planned to kill off Walter White Jr. at one point.
He never went through with it. Walt Jr. lived to the end, and his scenes became some of the most painful in the show. The moment he learns the truth about his father is still one fans bring up years later.
What else was RJ Mitte in after Breaking Bad?
He kept working, and he kept choosing roles that put disability in the middle of the story.
He played Campbell Bingham, a wheelchair rugby player, in the family drama Switched at Birth. He starred in the film Triumph as a wrestler with cerebral palsy. He also appeared in Standing Up for Sunny, The Oak Room and Westhampton.
He was set to star in a film called Forgotten Outlaw. It was still being prepared when he died. Its writer and director told TMZ the project is now on hold.

Why did RJ Mitte say he made no money from Breaking Bad?
He was open about the hard parts of fame, too.
On The Iced Coffee Hour podcast, he said he had paid more in taxes than he got from Breaking Bad. He said a business manager he trusted had taken money he gave her for his taxes and sent him fake tax filings instead.
He said the unpaid bill grew with interest year after year. By his account, it took him about 10 years to pay it all off. He told the story to warn other young actors to watch their money closely.
What did RJ Mitte do for people with disabilities?
This is the work he talked about most.
He spoke at schools and colleges about bullying, something he faced as a kid. His anti-bullying campaign was featured at Kent State University at Stark in Ohio, one of many campuses he visited.
He also spoke up for disabled actors getting real parts, not only being written in as storylines. His reps said his platform was built on disability awareness and inclusion. Fans with cerebral palsy have been sharing what it meant to see him on screen.

What did Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul say about RJ Mitte?
The cast of Breaking Bad has been grieving in public.
Bryan Cranston, who played his father Walter White, paid tribute with four words that hit fans hard: "I'll miss you, son." Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, and Dean Norris, who played his uncle Hank, also shared tributes.
Away from the show, Mitte had a lot to look forward to. In October 2025 he proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Kennedy Suarez. He asked her on her 30th birthday.
Other stories about famous families and fame are on our site, from the photo that reopened the Beckham family rift to what Brad Pitt said about his fortune. The studio side of Hollywood is changing too, as the Warner Bros and Paramount deal shows.
What will RJ Mitte be remembered for?
Most actors get remembered for one great role. He has that. Walt Jr. is part of one of the most loved TV shows ever made.
But the bigger thing he leaves behind is who got to play that role. A boy with cerebral palsy watched Breaking Bad in 2008 and saw someone like him at the centre of the story, eating breakfast, cracking jokes, getting angry and getting hurt. Today, more disabled actors are being cast to play disabled characters. He was one of the first faces of that change, years before it became normal.
He walked onto that set at 15. He walked off it as proof that a disabled kid could stand next to Bryan Cranston and hold his own.
