Trump just gave Elon Musk America's top science medal and called him "our modern-day Thomas Edison"

It is the highest honour America gives a scientist. Only 529 people had it before this week. Now the man who lands rockets has one too.

Key points
  • Trump called Musk a "national treasure" and a modern Edison
  • Four tech bosses got the science medal, two more got the tech medal
  • The very first winner in 1963 was a rocket pioneer

"Our modern-day Thomas Edison."

That is what President Donald Trump called Elon Musk on Thursday, 8 October 2026, as he gave him the National Medal of Science. It is the highest honour the United States gives to scientists and engineers.

Trump did not stop at Edison. He called Musk a "national treasure". He called him an "industrial titan, brilliant engineer and one of the greatest technology founders to ever live".

Clips of the moment spread fast. One post cheering it on has been seen nearly 700,000 times. Fans called it well deserved. Critics called it a prize for a friend.

Did Trump really give Elon Musk the National Medal of Science?

Yes. Trump handed out the medals at a White House science summit held at the Institute of Peace in Washington. The event was billed as a celebration of a new golden age for American science.

It was the first time Trump has presented either of America's two top science and technology medals, in either of his terms as president, Teslarati reports.

Musk was not alone on stage. Three other tech leaders got the same science medal, and two more got its sister award for technology.

Who Known for Medal

Sergey Brin Co-founder of Google National Medal of Science
Jensen Huang Boss of Nvidia National Medal of Science
Lisa Su Boss of AMD National Medal of Science
Satya Nadella Boss of Microsoft National Medal of Technology and Innovation
Michael Dell Dell Technologies National Medal of Technology and Innovation

Five of the six were born outside the United States, Al Jazeera points out. Musk himself was born in Pretoria, South Africa.

What did Trump say about Elon Musk?

Trump went big. "Few Americans in history have done more to advance America's national interest than Elon in one field after another," he said.

The Edison line is the one that stuck. Thomas Edison gave the world the practical light bulb and the record player, and he held more than a thousand patents. To millions of Americans he is the face of invention itself.

Musk has been compared to Edison before. Back in 2014 he was named for the Edison Achievement Award, a private prize for innovators. This time the comparison came from the president, with a medal attached.

Why is Elon Musk getting the medal?

The official citation does not mention Tesla by name, Teslarati notes. Instead it praises Musk "for engineering achievements of extraordinary ambition and scale that have pushed the frontiers of space exploration".

It also credits him with "renewing American technological leadership and opening a new chapter in American manufacturing".

In plain words, the medal is mostly about rockets. SpaceX built boosters that fly to space, come back and land upright, ready to fly again. That idea was once called impossible. Now NASA sends its astronauts up on those rockets.

The citation also points to communications and smart machines, Fox News reports. That points to Starlink, the SpaceX network of satellites that beams internet down to homes, ships and planes. The smart machines part points to his work on artificial intelligence.

What is the National Medal of Science?

Congress created the medal in 1959. The president hands it out to people who made a big difference in science or engineering. The National Science Foundation gathers nominations, and a committee picked by the president chooses the winners.

Before this week, 529 people had received it, according to the National Science Foundation. Most are university scientists whose names never trend online.

The first medal was given in 1963. It went to Theodore von Kármán, an aerospace engineer who fled anti-Jewish hatred in Europe. In America he helped start the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the NASA lab that later built rovers for Mars.

There is a family link too. Trump's uncle, the MIT physicist John G. Trump, received the same medal from President Ronald Reagan.

Musk already has other science honours. In 2019 he received the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication. You can see how very different the usual path to a top prize looks in our story about the Japanese scientist who won a Nobel for studying hunger.

Why are some people angry about Musk's medal?

Not everyone cheered. Critics say the medal has become a reward for friends of the White House.

Musk was the biggest donor to Trump's 2024 campaign, Al Jazeera reports. Fox News puts his spending at at least $250 million. He then helped lead DOGE, the government cost-cutting drive. The two men fell out in public in 2025 and later made up.

An opinion piece on the left-leaning site Daily Kos said the award "debases" the medal. It argued that the winners had given money to Trump, his government or his party.

Al Jazeera notes that four of the six winners are among the 10 richest people in the world. It also points to a strange twist. On the same day, the government suspended Microsoft and other big tech firms from the H-1B work visa scheme, over claims of fraud. Microsoft's boss Satya Nadella was one of the men being honoured.

Musk has faced pushback from scientists before. In 2025 more than 2,000 scientists signed a letter asking Britain's Royal Society to act over his behaviour. The society chose not to.

His fans see it the other way round. To them, a man who made rockets land and put internet in the sky has earned this more than almost anyone alive. For a look at how this White House talks back to its critics, read what Karoline Leavitt says now that she has left.

What does the medal mean for Musk?

For Musk, it is a seal of approval from the very top. Britain's Royal Society made him a fellow years ago. This honour comes from his own adopted country, handed over by its president.

It also caps a strange two years. He went from Trump's biggest backer, to running DOGE, to a bitter public split, and now back to a seat of honour. Few friendships in politics have swung so hard, so fast.

And it ties him to a long line of names. Edison himself never won this medal, because it did not exist yet. He got a Congressional Gold Medal in 1928, presented while the president spoke on the radio from the White House.

Who was the first person to win the National Medal of Science?

Theodore von Kármán. He was a rocket man.

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy hung the very first National Medal of Science around the neck of the engineer who helped America reach for space.

Sixty-three years later, the same medal went to the man whose rockets fly up, turn around and land on their own legs.

Edison never wore this medal. Musk now does, with the president's words behind it: Our modern-day Thomas Edison.
