GTA 6 fans are split over one Vice City picture. Is the game really a downgrade?
Two pictures of the same Miami-style highway started a fight among millions of fans. One looks real. One looks like a game. Only one came from Rockstar.

Same highway. Same green sports car. Same yellow taxi with a pink sign on its roof.
Two pictures of one Vice City road have split GTA 6 fans this week. The top one, labelled "What we expected", looks almost like a real photo. The sun is hard and bright, the shadows are deep, and the cars shine. The bottom one, labelled "What we got", is softer and flatter, with a hazy sky.
A fan shared the pair on 8 October and called it "disappointing". It passed 2.6 million views in about a day and pulled in around 1,500 replies.
Some people agreed. Many did not. And the fight says a lot about what fans now expect from the most hyped game in years.
Why does the new GTA 6 screenshot look worse?
Look closely at the two pictures and you notice something odd. They are not two different moments. They are the same shot.
Every car sits in the same lane. The truck on the right is cut off at the same spot. The boat in the bay leaves the same white trail. Even the birds on the street light are in the same place.
That means the top picture was not a trailer frame or a lost early version of the game. It appears to be an edited copy of the official screenshot, pushed to look more like a camera photo. Fans have been doing this to Rockstar's images for months, with photo filters and AI tools that sharpen edges, darken shadows and add shine.
So the bottom picture is the real game, as Rockstar chose to show it. The top one is a fan's idea of what it should look like.
Where did the "what we expected" picture come from?
Nobody has owned up to making it, so its exact origin is not known.
What is clear is the style. It looks like the "photo real" edits that pop up after every Rockstar image drop. Those edits make the light harsher, the colours stronger and the whole frame crisper. They often look amazing in a still picture. Whether they would look that good while you drive at 100 mph is another matter.
There is also a simple trick at play. Rockstar tends to give Vice City a warm, slightly hazy look, the way Miami can feel on a humid afternoon. Some fans love that. Others read the haze as "blurry" and the softer light as "cheap".

Does GTA 6 look like GTA 5?
That was one of the most common replies. Several fans said the new pictures look a lot like GTA 5, the game that came out back in 2013.
Others pushed back hard. One reply simply said the shot looks "hella nice". Another mocked the critics for expecting real life in a video game.
The answer to that came fast. Why not real life, people asked, if it is the most expensive game ever made?
So the split comes down to the yardstick. GTA 6 has been built up for so long that some players now judge it against reality, not against other games. Hype at that level is rare. Sport gets it sometimes, like the countdown to Messi's farewell game for Argentina.
How much did GTA 6 cost to make?
Rockstar and its owner, Take-Two, have never said. The number that keeps coming up in reports is more than $1 billion, based on analyst estimates. Some people online say $2 billion, but that figure has never been backed up.
For comparison, GTA 5 is widely reported to have cost about $265 million in 2013. Even the low estimate for GTA 6 is close to four times that.
A budget that size buys a huge, busy world full of people, cars, animals and things to do. It does not mean every frame will look like a photo. Every extra bit of detail has to be drawn many times a second, on a machine that sits under your TV.
Will GTA 6 look better on PC?
"It has to run on an Xbox," one reply said. The fan argued it will not look like magic until it comes to PC. Another told people to wait until they can play it on a powerful Nvidia RTX graphics card.
At launch, GTA 6 comes out only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version or a date for one.
Rockstar has done this before. Its last two big games came to PC long after consoles.
When those games did reach PC, they came with sharper textures, higher frame rates and better lighting. Modders then pushed them even further. Many of the jaw-dropping GTA 5 videos people still share online are modded PC versions, not what console players saw.

Are the official GTA 6 screenshots real gameplay?
Rockstar says its footage comes from the game itself. It said its second trailer, released in May 2025, was captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5.
That matters for this fight. If the official pictures come from a PS5, then what fans see is roughly what they will get on a PS5. There is no secret glossy version being held back on consoles.
By late September, Rockstar's media page held 99 screenshots. The newest batch landed on 31 August, a few days after a 27-minute extended look at the game premiered on Netflix on 27 August. Streaming giants are fighting hard for big entertainment moments right now, as the Skydance deal that put Batman and SpongeBob under one boss shows. Each new drop starts the same debate again, with fans zooming in on trees, water and faces.
When does GTA 6 come out?
GTA 6 comes out on 19 November 2026. That is 41 days from today.
It has been a long road. The first trailer landed in December 2023. The game was first meant for 2025, then slipped to May 2026, then to November. Take-Two's boss has reportedly said the size of the marketing push makes another delay very hard.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| December 2023 | First trailer |
| May 2025 | Second trailer, captured on PS5 |
| 27 August 2026 | 27-minute extended look on Netflix |
| 31 August 2026 | New batch of official screenshots |
| 19 November 2026 | Launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S |
What will GTA 6 look like at launch?
A fan took Rockstar's own shot, cranked it up, and the edit looked so good that millions of people felt let down by the real thing.
But the real thing is a full city that moves. Every car in that shot can be stolen. Every boat can be chased. Every one of those towers has streets below it full of people with their own routines. A still edit can't do any of that.
Some of the most excited replies came from people who simply looked at the bottom picture on its own. Without the glossy version next to it, it looked like what it is. It is the most detailed Vice City anyone has ever built.
In 41 days, nobody will be comparing screenshots any more. They will be driving down that highway themselves.
