A man died in a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Police say the tiger was not hurt
Within minutes of the news, one question filled the replies. Was the tiger shot? Police have now answered it, and the park has said it stays closed.

- Police say the tiger was not hurt and never left its enclosure
- The ambulance was called just two minutes before police heard
- A visitor says the tigers were peaceful hours earlier
The call to the ambulance service came at 1.33pm on Saturday. Two minutes later, police were told a man had gone into the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
By evening, he was dead. And by then, millions of people were asking the same thing. Is the tiger OK?
That question sits at the top of the replies to a post by The Mercian, a news account, which passed 5.9 million views within hours. This is the full account, based on what South Yorkshire Police, the park and the major news outlets have said.
Did the man really die at Yorkshire Wildlife Park?
Yes. The first police update said a man was seriously injured. Later on Saturday, South Yorkshire Police said that, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not named him. His family has been told and is being supported by specialist officers, according to police. We are not naming him either.
The park is near Doncaster. Its tiger area, Land of the Tigers, opened in 2011 and has a 300-metre raised walkway so visitors can look down on the animals, according to CNN. The park keeps Amur tigers, also called Siberian tigers.

Was the tiger shot at Yorkshire Wildlife Park?
No. This is the answer most people wanted.
South Yorkshire Police said the animal "was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident." They also said there was no wider risk to the public.
Many people had feared the worst. One reply under the post read, "I sincerely hope the tiger has NOT been shot dead because of this person." Others simply wrote, "Is the tiger ok?"
Those fears have a history behind them. In Florida in December 2021, a deputy shot and killed a tiger at Naples Zoo after it grabbed a contractor's arm through a fence, Newsweek notes. Zoos can face that call within minutes.

Who fired the shots people heard?
A witness told the press that "shots were fired" and the park was evacuated. That is what started the rumour that the tiger had been killed.
One outlet, GB News, reported it was "understood" that gas canisters were fired to frighten the tiger away from the man. Police and the park have not confirmed this. So far, nobody official has said what was fired, or by whom.
What is confirmed is simple. The tiger lived. The park also says its emergency response procedures were "immediately activated."
How did he get into the enclosure?
Police have not said. Their wording is that they received reports of a man "entering" the enclosure. Some newspapers wrote that he jumped in, but that detail comes from the press, not from police.
Footage of the attack spread on social media. Police have asked people not to share it. Newsweek reports that witnesses, speaking to British media, said the man seemed agitated before he went in. That is a witness view only. Officials have not explained why he did it, and we will not guess.
Many people asked the same thing. "What goes through people's minds?" one reply read.

What has the park said?
The park confirmed "a serious incident" at its tiger enclosure. It said it was working closely with the authorities to find out exactly what happened. It added that the safety of visitors, staff and animals is its highest priority.
The park was evacuated on Saturday and stays closed on Sunday 11 October. No reopening date has been given.
Has anything like this happened at the park before?
The reports we found do not mention any earlier incident like this at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. CNN reported none.
Tiger deaths at British zoos are rare, but they are not unknown. In 2013, a keeper at South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Cumbria was killed by a tiger. That tiger was not put down, according to reports at the time.
Animal stories hit people hard online. A roadkill deer loaded into a car and 180,000 giant tortoises found on one island both drew huge reactions. This one has a different weight. A person is dead, and people are sad, angry and worried for the animal all at once.

What happens to the tiger now?
Police say the tiger is unhurt and still in its enclosure. The park has not said whether the tiger involved will be moved or kept on show. It keeps more than one tiger, and the reports we found do not name the one involved.
Police are still investigating the death. More detail may come out later, and we will add it here when it does.
What did the visitor at the tiger enclosure say?
One reply under the post stopped many readers. A visitor wrote that they had been at the tigers a couple of hours earlier. "It was all peace and quiet," they said.
That is the picture that stays. A quiet afternoon at a walkway above the tigers. A big cat that, by police account, never left its home.
Then came 1.33pm. By nightfall the park was empty, and the tiger was still there, unharmed, in the enclosure it never left.
